Caravans for Off-Roading

Caravans for Off-Roading

When the holiday season arrives, South Africans love to hit the trails to their favourite campsites. Since this country offers such a vast selection of natural beauty, camping is a popular choice – and far more affordable than a stay in a hotel. Besides, some people prefer the authentic experience. They set up tents, air mattresses, and sleeping bags to serve as their accommodation for the next couple of days. Others prefer to bring the comforts of home to the campsite with a caravan hooked to their 4x4.

Most normal caravans ride low to the ground and have minimal ground clearance. They are designed for use on tarmac or smoothly graded dirt roads only. When rough roads loom, one has to slow right down to a crawl to avoid grounding them or shaking them apart. They simply do not have the clearance to negotiate ridges and gullies. With most outdoor enthusiasts driving 4x4 vehicles that can handle rough terrain, they need a caravan that can keep up. Kennis offers a solution to this problem.

Off-Road Caravans

As a 4x4 enthusiast, you enjoy exploring the uncharted and driving to areas that are inaccessible to normal cars. However, it is very difficult for a caravan to follow off the beaten track when tackling rough and uneven terrain. The wheels on a regular on-road model are too small and the suspension travel insufficient to negotiate rough terrain. As we have mentioned, ground clearance is poor too and there is no protection against flying debris. As a result, it is ill-advised to take a regular one on an off-road adventure. This problem is addressed by specialised off-road models, built specifically to handle the various challenges of undulating terrain.

An off-road caravan features a wide range of customisations and upgrades compared to low-riding, conventional models. Normal ones are as streamlined and aerodynamic as possible, helped by the low suspension. They are designed to work well on good roads only. However, if you are going on a 4x4 trip, none of these features will do you any good. Therefore, off-road trailers take a different approach to ensure that they can handle rough environments.

Aerodynamic drag may be an important consideration if you intend spending all your time towing on the open road at highway speeds. This does not apply to a 4x4 that is built to handle rough terrain and elevation changes and the same applies to an off-road caravan. These caravans have raised and reinforced chassis and suspension systems, reinforced axles, and larger off-road wheels and tyres. They also feature reinforced construction and stone guards to protect the shell from flying stones. They might have more high-speed wind resistance, but when going off-roading and exploring the great outdoors, they will keep on trucking long after that fancy road version has hung itself up in the first donga. Once the tarmac ends and the going gets tough, nothing else will handle the challenges ahead and keep up with your bakkie or SUV.
